How do we know what it is like to Travel to the centre of the earth?
Help! I’m confused on this!
We do not “know”
We just know what conditions should exist there, based on different types of observations and calculations.
For example, we know the mass of Earth and we know the surface density, therefore we can estimate what the density must be at the centre.
We know how the density changes with depth, by the manner in which “sound” (the waves from earthquakes) are reflected and refracted by the different layers and interfaces. That is how we know, for example, that the crust has three major layers, that there is a mantle, an outer core and an inner core.
Once you have all the information, you could, if you wanted to, imagine what the conditions would be like if you did try to travel to the centre.
However, if you are making a Hollywood movie, then you don’t stick to the truth and you make up whatever conditions you think will make your movie interesting.
